Built Before It Reaches the Park: Inside the Mayfield Decking Process

When you see a finished Mayfield deck around a holiday home, much of the work that has gone into it is hidden from view.

Behind the finished deck boards, balustrades and steps is a process that starts long before our installation team arrives on site.

In our latest video [link to where the video is], Chaz Gross, Mayfield Sales Director, takes us on a quick tour behind the scenes to show some of the materials we use and how a Mayfield deck starts to come together.

It starts with the right materials

One of the first things Chaz highlights in the video is the Mayfield Board – Mayfield’s own decking board, developed specifically with quality, performance and sustainability in mind.

Manufactured from hardwearing recycled uPVC, the Mayfield Board combines a natural wood-grain appearance with the low-maintenance benefits of uPVC decking. Its reinforced web core is designed to improve strength, while the slightly convex surface helps water drain away rather than allowing it to sit on the board.

The matt, wood-grain finish has also been designed with slip resistance in mind – particularly important for outdoor decking that is regularly exposed to wet British weather.

Importantly, these aren’t simply product claims. The Mayfield Board has been independently tested and certified to recognised British Standards, including BS EN 16165 for slip resistance and BS EN 13501-1 for reaction to fire.

The board is also made using recycled material that can be responsibly recycled again, requires very little ongoing maintenance and comes with a 10-year warranty.

What is underneath your decking matters too

Deck boards naturally get most of the attention, but the structure underneath them is just as important.

Mayfield offers both timber and aluminium subframes, allowing the construction of the deck to be matched to the requirements of the project.

Our aluminium subframe provides a strong, lightweight alternative to timber and is resistant to moisture, insects and rot. Aluminium can also be recycled, making it particularly well suited to projects where longevity and low maintenance are important considerations.

For timber frames, the video also gives a glimpse of the C24 timber used within the warehouse.

C24 is a recognised structural softwood strength class used within the UK construction industry. It offers greater strength than lower grades such as C16 and is commonly chosen where additional strength or longer spans are required.

Once the finished deck is installed, much of this structure disappears from view – but the quality and strength of a deck starts with what is underneath it.

Built in the factory, ready for the park

Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the video is seeing the decking frames actually being put together. Rather than every deck being constructed completely from scratch once it arrives at the holiday park, the frames can be prepared at Mayfield before being transported to the relevant location.

As Chaz explains in the video, when the sections reach the park, they can effectively be put together “a bit like a jigsaw”.

There is a practical reason for doing it this way.

Preparing the deck structure in the factory gives the Mayfield team a controlled environment in which to build and check the main sections before they leave. It also means less needs to be constructed from scratch when everything arrives on the pitch.

For holiday parks, where installers may be working around holiday homes, owners, guests and other contractors, making the on-site stage as straightforward as possible can make a real difference.

Quality is more than what you can see

It is easy to compare decking by looking at colours, finishes and the final appearance. But there is much more behind a deck than the surface you walk on.

The materials used, the subframe underneath, the way individual components are prepared and the way the complete decking system comes together all contribute to how it performs over time.

That is why we believe quality needs to run through the whole process – not simply be added at the end.

Mayfield has been producing decking for nearly 40 years, with decking designed and manufactured here in the UK before being installed through our nationwide network of Approved Contractors.

This short warehouse tour gives just a glimpse behind the scenes, but it shows something important:

A Mayfield deck begins long before you see the finished result.
